3.2 Extrude for polygon modeling
Having a geometrical primitive like a Cube or Cylinder in a scene could
be great for learning purposes, but you will probably want to modify their
shapes to build different objects. Regarding object transformation and
modeling, you will find that one option in Blender is among the most
used tools for polygon modeling.
The extrude is a tool that allows us to select and expand the shape of a
Mesh object. You can select either a vertex, edge, or face to start an
extrude. With the extrude, you get a copy of the selected elements
connected to the original selection. That is a simple way to describe how
it works.
It may sound confusing at first, but after using the extrude for a few
times, you will see how it can transform any 3D modeling pipeline. For
instance, if we select a face from a Cube and apply an extrude, you will
see the results shown in Figure 3.5.
